You probably have, but hearsay can often be misleading. Quite often we hear things which are not true. A few thoughts are presented in this little pamphlet with the hope that you will read it carefully, study every passage of Scripture and thoroughly investigate all things believed and taught by those who are members of the church of Christ. We claim to do all things according to the Scriptures. Compare our belief, our name and worship with what the Bible teaches and see if we are what we claim to be.
The church of Christ is not a part of denominationalism. It is neither Protestant, Catholic nor Jew. It is comprised simply of individuals who have been born anew through obedience to the commands of Christ and His apostles (John 3:1-5; 1 Peter 1:23). It is the church Jesus said He would build (Matthew 16:18). It came into existence on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Christ in the city of Jerusalem A.D. 33 (Acts 2). Christ is the head of His church (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18). A local congregation is scripturally called the church of Christ (Romans 16:16).
Members of the church of Christ meet upon the first day of the week to worship God.
The worship service today is identical to the worship of Christians of the first century. This includes:
⇒ The singing of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs in praise unto God (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). No mechanical instruments are used.
⇒ Individuals give of their means as they have been prospered upon the first day of the week only (1 Corinthians 16:2). No tithing, no pledges, no sales or any other money making schemes.
⇒ The Lord’s Supper is observed upon the first day of each week in memory of the suffering and death of our Lord (Matthew 26:26-28; 1 Corinthians 2:23-25; Acts 20:7).
⇒ Prayers and thanksgiving are offered to God (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18; 1 Timothy 2:1-3).
⇒ The gospel is preached in simplicity (Matthew 28:18-20).
We have no desire to be popular in the eyes of men, neither do we solicit the praise of men. Our only purpose is to preach the gospel of Christ without addition, subtraction or substitution. We offer the Bible as it is. We are not a welfare agency. We are not a fun club. We do not offer you cake, coffee and donuts.
We are not in any kind of business and we sell no products. We are not in politics nor any social movements. We do not propose to entertain you with shows, dancing and bingo. We want the church to be the church and to function in the realm for which it was designed, that is, to provide for the spiritual welfare of mankind. We will certify unto you the gospel of Christ which is able to save the souls of men (Romans 1:16).
It is not different simply for the sake of being different, but rather takes its characteristics from the doctrine upon which it stands. The church of Christ is not governed by creeds of men, councils nor synods. The New Testament is recognized as the complete and only authority in directing every act of work and worship. The church of Christ in your community is autonomous, it is not a branch or part of any other organization. Its government consists of Christ as the head of the church with all authority (Matthew 28:18). Elders oversee the local congregation (1 Peter 5:1-2), deacons serve with all the saints (Philippians 1:1).
In exactly the same way in which people became members of the church in the first century. God requires the same thing of every individual:
⇒ One must hear the gospel and believe its message (Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6).
⇒ One must believe that Jesus is and that He will reward those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).
⇒ God commands all men everywhere to repent (a change of the mind which leads to the reformation of life) (Luke 13:3; Acts 17:30).
⇒ Confess Christ as Lord (Romans 10:10).
⇒ Be baptized (immersed) for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; Mark 16:15-16).
Upon obedience to these commands, the Lord adds the saved to His church (Acts 2:47).
Individual members of the church of Christ call themselves Christians only (Acts 2:26).
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
— (Matthew 7:21 – NKJV)
“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
— (Revelation 2:10 – NKJV)
(Isaiah 1:18)
